What is really included in the cost of treatment abroad?

Олена Пилипів4 min readUpdated October 28, 2026
Comparing a clinic estimate and the full cost of a treatment trip.

Advertised prices usually show only part of the expense. To understand the full budget for a treatment trip, check what the clinic's offer includes, what is paid separately and what costs may arise during or after treatment.

In brief: ask the clinic for a written cost breakdown and budget separately for medical services, travel, accommodation and possible follow-up care. Do not compare totals alone: similarly priced offers may include different services. The NHS advises checking in advance whether the procedure, specialist's fee, medication, accommodation, aftercare and additional treatment costs are included.

The procedure price is not the whole budget

A clinic's quote may cover only the procedure, while flights, hotels or some diagnostics are separate. Other offers include some of these services in a package. Compare the full expected budget, not the advertised figure:

ExpenseWhat to ask the clinic
Medical serviceExactly which procedures the quoted price includes
DiagnosticsWhether consultation, tests, X-rays or scans are included
Team servicesWhether the doctor, anaesthetist and other staff are included
Materials and medicationWhich materials are used and which medicines are included
Follow-up and aftercareWhether repeat consultations and dressings are included if needed
TravelWhether the package covers hotel, transfers, meals or an interpreter
Possible extra costsWhat may be prescribed separately after examination or treatment

This is not a universal list: the offer depends on the procedure and clinic. Request written confirmation of every item.

How should you check a treatment package?

“Package” and “all-inclusive” do not specify its contents. Request a detailed offer showing each service as included, excluded or dependent on examination results.

Different procedures require different checks. For dentistry, clarify diagnostics, restoration materials and laboratory work. For hair transplantation, ask what the procedure covers and whether prescribed medicines and a follow-up examination are included.

When can the preliminary price change?

An online estimate may be preliminary. After an in-person examination or diagnostics, the doctor may revise the plan. This does not necessarily mean bad faith, but before travelling clarify:

  • what circumstances may change the plan;
  • which extra services may be needed;
  • whether you will be told the new cost before additional treatment;
  • whether you can decline or take time to decide;
  • treatment cancellation and deposit refund terms.

If the clinic explicitly says the amount depends on examination, do not treat it as final. Request a written explanation of what could change the price.

Travel and care costs afterwards

Separately from the clinic's estimate, calculate flights, accommodation, food, local transport and companion costs. Allow a reserve for an extra night or ticket change if the treatment schedule changes.

Ask how care will work after returning: whether the clinic provides records, whom to contact and whether another trip may be needed. The NHS advises checking aftercare, extended stay and further treatment costs if needed.

Do not assume ordinary travel insurance covers complications of planned treatment abroad. Check your policy and ask the insurer in writing which situations are covered.

How do you compare clinic offers?

Put written responses in one table and compare the same points:

  • the procedure and its extent;
  • diagnostics;
  • materials and medication;
  • follow-up consultations;
  • accommodation and transfers;
  • possible additional services;
  • deposit and cancellation terms;
  • aftercare;
  • estimated travel costs;
  • the date the offer was received.

Frequently asked questions

What does “all-inclusive” mean in a clinic offer?

There is no standard package. Request a list of included services and separately payable costs.

Can the price change after arrival?

Yes, if the treatment plan changes after examination. Ask in advance about possible reasons and for new costs to be agreed before additional procedures.

Are flights included in treatment costs?

Not necessarily. Check the written offer and budget separately for travel and accommodation.

Does the warranty cover another trip?

Not necessarily. Ask in writing exactly what it covers and which costs remain yours.

Why is Medikout free for patients?
