When will the final result of a hair transplant be visible?

Appearance changes gradually after a hair transplant. Redness, swelling and crusts may be visible in the first days. The transplanted hairs then shed before new growth begins. This can be worrying, but the early appearance does not show the final result.
In brief: transplanted hairs usually shed within the first 6 weeks, and new growth begins around 3 months after the procedure. Results are assessed at around 12 months. Exact timing varies; agree your return to work and flight home with the clinic.
How does appearance change by stage?
| Stage | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Healing | First days after the procedure | Redness, crusts, tenderness or swelling. Follow the clinic's instructions |
| Shedding | Usually within the first 6 weeks | Most transplanted hairs shed, while follicles remain under the skin |
| Growth begins | 5–6 weeks after shedding, around 3 months after the procedure | The first fine hairs appear; initial growth is uneven |
| Increasing density | Following months | Hair becomes longer and denser |
| Result assessment | Around 12 months; the crown may need up to 18 | The doctor assesses density and the appearance of the transplanted area |
This is general guidance, not a prediction for an individual patient. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) provides the shedding and regrowth timings. Your doctor should explain your review schedule.
What can the transplant look like in the first days?
The scalp may look unusual immediately afterwards. Tenderness, redness, swelling or small crusts around grafts can occur. After FUE, short extraction marks may be visible in the donor area.
Follow the clinic's instructions on washing, sleeping, exercise and headwear. Do not pick crusts or rub the transplanted area unless your doctor permits it.

Why do transplanted hairs shed?
Most transplanted hairs shed during the first weeks. According to ASPS, this usually occurs within 6 weeks of surgery. The hair shaft falls out while the follicle stays in place, so shedding alone does not mean failure.
Patients experience this differently. If shedding worries you or accompanies symptoms the clinic identified as concerning, contact the doctor and send photos. Do not judge by individual hairs or comparisons with others' photos.
When does new hair start growing?
According to ASPS, another 5–6 weeks pass after shedding before growth resumes. New hairs are initially fine, short and uneven. Appearance then changes gradually, but pace and density vary individually.
The full result is usually assessed at around a year. Photos at 1–3 months therefore do not reveal the final appearance. See Medikout cases for real patients' results after a year.
When can I return to work?
According to ASPS, many patients feel well enough for work and light activity after a few days. Strenuous exercise and contact sports are usually avoided for at least three weeks. Obtain your exact timings from the clinic's protocol.
Working from home may be comfortable sooner than client-facing or camera work. Before the procedure, ask:
- how much recovery time to allow;
- when you can resume your type of work;
- whether crusts, redness or a shaved donor area will be visible;
- when you can restart training and other usual activities.
- Treatment & materials
- Hotel nights
- Transfers
- Coordinator-translator
When can I fly home?
There is no universal timing. Before buying tickets, ask the clinic:
- when the postoperative examination takes place;
- whether washing at the clinic or a follow-up visit is needed;
- whether you must stay in the country until that review;
- when the doctor considers flying acceptable for your situation;
- what to do if your condition changes after the procedure.
Allow time for review and possible plan changes. Agree your return flight with the doctor managing your case, not only a coordinator.
When should I seek help?
If your condition rapidly worsens or you develop symptoms the clinic identified as urgent, contact local medical services without waiting for a reply from abroad. A step-by-step plan is in “What should you do if something goes wrong after treatment abroad?”.
How does Medikout help you prepare?
A coordinator speaking your language helps plan procedure, review and flight dates. Partner clinics explain aftercare and review schedules before booking. Selection is free for patients.

Frequently asked questions
Does shedding transplanted hairs mean the procedure failed?
No, not by itself. Most transplanted hairs usually shed within the first 6 weeks while follicles stay in place. Discuss progress with the clinic if concerned.
When can the transplant result be assessed?
Not in the first weeks. New growth starts around 3 months; results are assessed at around a year. Follow your review schedule.
When can I return to work?
Many patients return to work and light activity after a few days. Exact timing depends on how you feel, your job and clinic advice.
When can I fly home?
Confirm your review date and obtain clearance from the treating clinic. Do not arrange a flight that misses required follow-up.
